All New Samantha

This post only has ALL NEW Samantha content in it:

  1. New pictures
  2. New video
  3. New, uh, “enhancements”

One caveat, though — the new pictures are in the new video. So you’ll have to watch it to see them. But don’t worry, real static versions are coming to the blog soon.

Without further ado, here’s a little video I put together of Sam, made from stills and video of our latest beach shoot, as she competes for Miss Hooters of Canada 2010:

You might notice that Sammy looks a bit different since the last time you saw her… that’s what #3 above was referring to.

If you like what you see, do Sam a favour and vote for her from your mobile phone. Like the video says, text the name SAM to 747474 once per day, and you’ll be entered to win a trip to Hollywood, Florida for the Miss Hooters International Pageant.

She’s also on Twitter and has a Facebook Group too!

Two Years Ago Today

Array

My gorgeous friend Katie, just 17 here, photographed at the Jam Martini bar. Nikon Speedlight bounced off the ceiling.

The green and white object behind Katie’s chin bothers the hell out of me, but this was just a quick snap so I can’t be too hard on myself.

Close-Up

Array

This is one of my favourite headshots for two reasons.

  1. Light.
  2. Her face.

I was shooting S outdoors in harsh, mid-day sunlight, which is pretty much the least flattering thing on Earth. I had brought along an Alien Bees 1600 monolight to overpower the sun but I actually turned it off for this shot. There are two things going on here with the light. Firstly, I positioned S so that her face was completely hidden from the sun. All of the sunlight was falling on her hair, which shielded her face. Secondly, the sun was bouncing off the light-coloured sand and on to her face, which provides the highlights in the bottom half of her eyes. If you look closely, you can see a little orange speck in there — that was the ridiculous pair of orange board shorts I was wearing.

S’s face, of course, is fantastic, and nothing more needs to be said.

Labour Day Weekend

From two months ago, here’s Amanda, photographed on Labour Day weekend. It was quite possibly the worst shooting weekend of my life, as I had one model cancel on me, Amanda was hungover, another cancelation late one night, and then the discovery that another photographer used some of the same setups in the same location (I’ve already deleted my versions).

Swimwear September: Samantha III

I talked about the mad dash that Sam and I made to the Toronto Islands in my last post about her. This photo was towards the end of our very abbreviated shoot, but turned out fabulously.

Tech details: Nikon D200, f/3.5, 1/200 with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. Lighting in front from an Alien Bees 1600 with a shoot-through umbrella.

Swimwear September: Randall

Array

I don’t see very many sunrises. But when I do, I always make sure I have a pretty girl to stand in front of them. This pretty girl is named Randall, and she’s the best model I know for a couple reasons. One, she met me at the beach at 5:45am even though she lives 45 minutes away. Two, she got chest-deep in Lake Ontario for me even though it was freezing. The air temperature was 12 degrees that morning when we started shooting!

This shot here was at 6:19am, well before we got in the water, and just slightly before the sun started peeking over the horizon. I’ve never seen anyone so chipper at 6am as Randall was. She was bouncing around, jumping up and down — frolicking, if you will. She was so excited and so cute doing it!

Tech details: Nikon D200, f/5.6, 1/125 with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. Sunrise in the back, Alien Bees 1600 with standard reflector in the front. Or maybe with a shoot-through umbrella. I can’t remember!

Swimwear September: Samantha II

Oh Samantha, how I love thee. And it’s a good thing she loves me back, otherwise our photos together would suck. I picked up Sam at Hooters in Whitby and we braved the rush hour traffic to make it to the downtown ferry terminal. We had a long walk to the beach at Hanlan’s Point after getting off the ferry, so we had to scramble as there was only about 20 minutes of sunlight left. We fired off about four different looks until it was too dark for the camera to even focus on Sam’s lovely face. The shot above is early on, before the sun went below the horizon.

Tech details: Nikon D200, f/2.8, 1/60 with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. Natural light. Cold water.

A bonus shot from the beach:

Swimwear September: Brandi

Array

From late September 2008, in the waning days of summer. Brandi and I have been partners in crime for nearly four years now, and this was by far our best photoshoot… until recently. I had the opportunity to photograph Brandi on the beach at sunrise a couple weeks ago and the results were stunning. Stay tuned to the blog for some of those!

Tech details: Nikon D200, f/5.6, 1/250 at 200mm with a 70-200mm lens. Lighting was mid-day sunshine to camera right, and an Alien Bees 1600 in a shoot-through umbrella to camera left. As Brandi had climbed up a few feet in the air, I had to extend my light stand as high as it would go, which made it extra wobbly in the wind. Luckily, Brandi’s boyfriend, race-car driver James Hinchcliffe, held it steady for me and was a great all-around assistant.

Swimwear: the awesome Mayra Collection.

Swimwear September: Kelly

Array

From August 2007, this is Kelly, in what’s probably my favourite swimwear shot I’ve ever taken. The lifeguard boats matched her swimwear so well — it was a lucky find! Kelly was none too happy with me this day, as we parked at the end of the beach and walked a crazy long time to get to this spot. Her feet were killing her, and the handle of her bag broke too. I think it was worth it though! Kelly looks a bit different now than she did then, so hopefully we can get out to the beach again one day to capture her new look.

Tech details: Nikon D200, f/2.8, 1/320 at 200mm with a 70-200mm lens. Lighting was the final rays of the sun just as it touched the horizon.

Something Darker

Last time Amanda was seen on this blog, the images were light and bright and she wasn’t wearing very much. We got together for our second shoot at the end of June for something that was a little darker, and with more clothing.

Shot with a Nikon D700 and 85mm f/1.4 lens.
