She’s blind as a bat without them.
Charlotte’s one of the more unique people I’ve met, and I wish I could give you all something tangible to back that up, but it’s tough to put into words. I’ve said it before on this blog and I’ll say it again — one of the primary benefits of this little hobby is being able to get to know so many varied, interesting people.
Meet 18-year old Charlotte. This was our second shoot, though our third attempt. Our very first attempt got interrupted by incredibly heavy winds, which made picture-taking fairly impossible. We played it safe and stayed indoors this time at the Westin Harbour Castle in downtown Toronto.
For the camera nerds, lighting was an Alien Bees ABR800 Ringflash in front, with a AB400 in an umbrella for the rim light.
There was a time where some of you probably thought I never photographed anyone but Sam, given her large presence on this blog. But it’s been almost six months since we last shot together! Enjoy the return of Samantha. More to come!
From Kaley’s first ever photoshoot last week at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. These were shot with an AlienBees Ringflash ABR800.
Here’s a few more images of Katie from week four of our little project. Exasperated from not wearing makeup, she slapped on a little eyeliner and mascara for these pictures. These were all done with natural late-day window light.
Because the weather has still been mostly crap, Katie and I went back to where we started for week one, which is setting up shop in her tiny kitchen. Instead of using the bathroom wall as a backdrop, we used the black bathroom door. And instead of wearing makeup, Katie wore none. Yep, none. Nada. Zilch. At my request, of course. She would never do such a thing on her own, and in fact hated every single second of being photographed as her natural self. But the reason I asked is because she’s obviously beautiful. I think the results here bear that out.
Lighting was as simple as it comes — one AlienBees 400 in a small umbrella.
Katie described herself as looking like a “cavewoman”. I guess all cavewomen were insanely gorgeous then.

These were all made in Katie’s super tiny kitchen hallway, as seen below. We had a softbox high and above Katie. I needed to keep Katie a decent distance from a background, so I situated her in front of her bathroom doorway and used the far bathroom wall as a backdrop. I put a small flash in the bathroom with coloured gels on it to light up the wall behind her. Miniature photo studio!
Lastly we moved to Katie’s bedroom and shot some low-light images with only her bedside lamp for illumination, and a 50mm f/1.8 lens to capture it all.
Natasha hates her profile. I happen to think it’s beautiful.

The green and white object behind Katie’s chin bothers the hell out of me, but this was just a quick snap so I can’t be too hard on myself.
